About JA PRISM

JA PRISM supports the transfer and implementation of three evidence-based mental health promotion and prevention practices – suicide prevention, reducing loneliness among older people, and promoting emotional well-being in children and young people – in 61 implementation sites across 18 EU Member States and 2 associated countries.

Project info

JA PRISM aims to reduce the burden of mental ill health among vulnerable groups by promoting ways to obtain and maintain a good mental health, preventing mental health problems, and improving access to treatment and services across the EU and Associated Countries. This will be achieved through the transfer and roll-out of three best and promising practices with clear human rights approaches into new contexts. These practices target vulnerable groups in three key areas: suicide prevention, loneliness in the elderly, and emotional well-being in children and young people. By implementing these interventions, the initiative seeks to improve mental health and quality of life for vulnerable populations, leading to increased access to care and measurable improvements in well-being.

The activities of JA PRISM are distributed in 7 Work Packages (WPs). Four transversal WPs; WP1 Coordination and Management, WP2 Communication and dissemination, WP3 Evaluation, WP4 Sustainability and three technical WPs focused on the transfer of the three practices selected by participating member states; WP5 Transfer of BIZI practice addressing suicide prevention, WP6 Transfer of Circle of Friends (CoF) practice dealing with loneliness in the elderly and WP7 Transfer of Act, Belong Commit (ABC) practice fostering emotional well-being in children and young people. The project has a broad geographical reach, with 61 implementation sites spanning 18 European Union Member States and 2 Associated Countries. These sites vary in scope and scale of implementation, reflecting the diverse contexts and needs across regions and healthcare systems.

By implementing 61 tailored practices, the program aims to achieve tangible benefits, such as higher health literacy rates and reduced stigma among targeted groups. Knowledge-sharing platforms facilitate the adoption of successful strategies, fostering more effective interventions. Building stakeholder networks and international collaborations supports sustainable community impact. Finally, JA PRISM drives policy changes that result in more equitable and effective mental health service frameworks.

PRISM management structure

JA PRISM approach

The JA PRISM approach is based on the scaling-out methodology devised to guide and support countries in designing and implementing practices according to their real needs, possibilities and resources. The methodology is grounded on the interconnection of independent theoretical models that address crucial aspects when it comes to the implementation of complex interventions in disparate contexts. The methodology, which has been used in other Joint Actions such as JADECARE and JACARDI, not only specifies the critical issues to be considered during the implementation process (transfer and adoption mechanisms) but also emphasizes the relevance of analysing the readiness of the organizations, implementation facilitators and support delivered, and evaluation of the effectiveness of the practices. Thus, the scaling-out methodology includes three interrelated elements: the Transfer and adoption process, the Capacity building model, and the Evaluation Framework.
